ANNOIT MULLE TÄN
(scroll down for translation)
annoit mulle tän armaisen talon
jonka makuuhuoneen
ikkunaa raapii
omenapuu
jossa rastas pesii
mä annoin sulle
betonitornien pihan
pihojen leikit,
leikiten maailmanrauhaa
puolustin
annoit mulle
unien nurmen
jolla hevonen kulkee
sieltä täältä
järjestelmällisesti
ruohon leikkaa
mä annoin sulle
sanattoman yön
jolloin valvotaan
autojen valoja
kun ne pehmeästi katossa
risteilee ja katoaa
annoit mulle
tän talon
huoneen
ja nurmen
ja hevosen
ja omenapuun
ja rastas lauloi
vapauslauluja
all you need is love
it’s all right mama
ja rastas hautoi
vanhoja kattiloita,
aseita ja lautasia
teeastiastoa
sillä kun poikaset lähtee
on kaupunki karu paikka
ei anna mitään evästystä
vain turistikauppoja
muotiliikkeitä
suurlähetystöjä
kallita kahviloita
miten ne selviää?
miten me selvitään?
missä on meidän paikka,
meidän kaupunki?
"You gave me this"
You gave me this dear house
with a sleeping room window scratched
by an apple tree
where a thrush nests
I gave you
the concrete towers’ yard
with its games
I defended
world peace playfully
You gave me
the grass of dreams
where a horse goes
here and there
eating systematically
I gave you
a wordless night
when we stay awake
and watch car lights
smoothly crossing the ceiling
and disappearing
You gave me this house,
the room
the grass
the horse
the apple tree
and the thrush sang
songs of freedom
“all you need is love,
it’s all right, mama”
and the thrush incubated
old casseroles,
forks and plates,
a tea set
cause when the young leave the nest,
the city is an unfriendly place
It doesn’t give any help
only tourist shops,
fashion boutiques,
embassies,
expensive cafes:
how do they survive?
how do we survive?
Where is our place,
our city?

TATTARISUOLLE san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(scroll down for translation)
Kun mä ajan Tattarisuolle
ja sataa lunta,
niin Rajakylän kioskin kohdalla mä haaveilen:
tässä voitais käydä kahvilla ens kesänä
tää paikka on vähän syrjässä,
täällä asuu ehkä onnellista väkeä
täällä on noita rivitaloja pellon laidassa
Kun mä ajan sun luokse mä kuulen
lumijoutsenten laulun
mä kuulen
Kun mä ajan sun luokse,
niin Tattarisuonsillalla mä ajattelen:
mä ajan yli hautojen
kohta oon sun luonas
mä saan rakastaa
ja olla vapaa.
Kun mä ajan sun luokse, mä kuulen
lumijoutsenten laulun
mä kuulen
To Tattarisuo
When I drive to Tattarisuo,
and it’s snowing,
at the Rajakylä kiosk I dream
here we could come for a coffee next summer
this is a margin area
maybe here lives lucky folk
in the row houses by the field
When I drive to you
I can hear
the song of the snow swans,
I can hear
When I drive to Tattarisuo,
on the bridge over the Lahti motorway
I think:
I drive over the graves
soon I’m at your place
I can love and be free
When I drive to you
I can hear
the song of the snow swans,
I can hear
(Tattarisuo and Rajakylä are north-eastern districts of Helsinki)

TENERIFFABLUES san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(translation below)
1
Keskellä aavan meren on saari ihana
se hedelmistään kaukaa tunnetaan
Jyrkät rannat muuten, mut suojaisa poukama
on aina tehnyt kauppaa tuotteillaan
Ja myrkkylaiva kun saapuu satamaan
terävinä sitä täällä odottaa
porton nännit, vuorenhuiput
ja paukut kapakoissa sataman
2
Sydän jos on sulla, se pelkää pahinta
ei tohdi tulla – siis ota tilkka
Matkallasi kohti Skandinaviaa
rohkaisua aina tarvitaan
Ei täällä ole koskaan tarvinnut odottaa,
että joka iikka ryypyn eteensä saa
Engelsmanni ryypyn joi
ennen kuin ehdit huutaa Hoi!
3
Tää humala on kölin alta, meren haudasta
ja paineen alla pohjaa koluan
Siellä tuli vastaan muuan meriantura
päätyi pannulle se saman kapakan
On koti-ikävä nyt meillä aivan hirveä
se niin kuin tyrsky rintaani löi
Mut pahemmin – kaiketi
osui tyttöön, joka tulppaaneja möi.
4
kun täältä kerran lennän pohjoiseen
niin vilttiini mä tiukkaan käperryn
hoikat emot kulkee ohi ruokakärryineen
mä katson ulos pimeyteen
jossain alapuolellamme valoneliöitä nään
ne pilvien takaa häämöttää
Hollanti – kaiketi –
kasvihuoneet siellä luovat valoaan

ESPRESSO san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(scroll down for translation)
Katselin vanhaa
espressokeitintä
ja muistelin
sitä kiihkeyttä
lomaa rannikolla
ja kiiltävää espressokeitintä
sillä aikaa kun kahvi tulee
pikkulintuset ilmamassojen mukana
lentävät kasvoilta kasvoille
rannikolta toiselle
ja aurinko
lämmittää raunioita
sillä aikaa
kun kahvi tulee
tuulen mukana pikkulinnut
kasvoilta kasvoille
lentävät
rannikolta toiselle
etsien
lämmintä ilmaa
punaisilla siivillään
harmailla varpaillaan
Espresso
I watched the old espresso cooker
and recalled
that impetuosity,
a holyday by the coast
and the shiny espresso cooker
while the coffee is coming
tiny birds with the air mass
fly from face to face
coast to coast
and the sun warms the ruins
while the coffee is coming
tiny birds with the wind
fly from face to face,
coast to coast,
searching for the warm air
with their red wings
and grey toes

METSÄVALSSI san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(scroll down for translation)
1
metsä laaja vehreä
sinne polku johdattaa
kun on tuuli leppeä
tuomi kukkaan puhkeaa
aina vietiin metsään se
mitei enää tarvittu
sinne lahos talvirenkaat
sammaloitui salora
metsä laaja vehreä
tuuli latvaa tuudittaa
talven viima kireä
kun hetkeks vaihtaa suuntaa
¬¬
2
aina kertyi liiteriin
mitä ehkä tarvittiin
koivunpahka, oksankoukku
pinon taakse jätettiin
paisu pahka koivussa
ja finni naamassa
nuori vitsa väännetään
oikku voitoks käännetään
metsä laaja vehreä
tuuli latvaa tuudittaa
talven viima kireä
kun hetkeks vaihtaa suuntaa
3
kerran metsätiellä näin
metsoperheen hajallaan
arvokkaasti edestäin
astelivat ne ajallaan
älä painaa kaasua
jos elukoita ilmestyy
oli sitten jonkun kissa, ketunpoika
taikka pyy
metsä laaja vehreä
tuuli latvaa tuudittaa
talven viima kireä
kun hetkeks vaihtaa suuntaa
4
aina ennen joulua
mentiin setää katsomaan
arvokkaasti ajallaan
ulkoilimme me pihalla
täällä luonnon helmassa
versoo hermorauniot
jos huutaa tuskissaan
metsä vastaa vaan ”so not”
metsä laaja vehreä
tuuli latvaa tuudittaa
talven viima kireä
kun hetkeks vaihtaa suuntaa
Forest Waltz
1
Green, wide forest
a path takes you there
as gentle wind blows
the bird cherry blooms
that which had no use anymore
was always taken to the forest
there rot old snow tyres
and an old Salora-TV was covered with moss
Refrain:
green, wide forest
the wind lulls the treetops
as cold sharp winter wind
changes its direction for a moment
2.
that which may be useful
was gathered in the shed
a birch gnarl, a hook of branch
were left behind the woodpile
grow gnarl in the birch
and the birch in the meadow
the young twig is twisted
and a whim is turned into a victory
Refrain
3.
once i saw on the forest road
a family of grouse
scattered around
they walked with dignity and no haste
don't gasify
when animals appear on the road
whether it is someone's cat, a fox-puppy
or a hazel grouse
Refrain
4.
before the Christmas
we use to go to see uncle
we walked with dignity and no haste
in his yard
Here in the nature
the ruined nerves green
somebody cries in agony
the forest answers "so not"
Refrain

JOULUN JÄLKEEN san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(scroll down for translation)
oliko levy viety rouvalle sinne vanhainkotiin, vai vahingossa kahvilaan.
Maija sanoi, että oli vienyt sen jollekin henkilökunnalle, joka ei kyllä tiennyt, kuka sen oli voinut tilata.
Soitin takaisin Mikolle ja selostin tämän että,
sitten levy on vanhainkodissa jollain.
Rouva ilahtui siitä että ne oli hiekottanut. Se tuli mun kanssa ostarille, otti seinästä rahaa ja maksoi levyn.
After the Christmas
After the Christmas I then went to the supermarket and thought / that at the same time I could take the right CD to one lady / she just came home and talked, that it was a total misunderstanding / I then went to the office to ask if they had one cassette there / it has been here for a while and nobody comes to fetch it / I said, that I knew, that it was that cassette, that is here and I thought that someone else has just ordered it // Mike Ström had met that lady of the old people’s home at the station and she had told, that she needed this CD /
Mike called me and gave his mobile phone to the lady, who asked where she could get our CD // sometimes a person disappears or is lost // I put a fresh CD into an envelope and Maija took it as I was too busy / Six weeks after that Mikko called me and asked if the CD was taken to the old people’s house or accidentally to the cafe / Maija said she had taken it to the staff, although they had no clue who had ordered it / I called back to Mikko and explained that now someone there has our CD / / The lady was delighted to see that they had sanded the street. She came with me to the supermarket, took cash from the automat and paid the CD

ASUNNOISTA PUHEEN OLLEN san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(scroll down for translation)
Isällä oli ennen yksiö Turun keskustassa,
Puutorin nurkilla
ja samassa rapussa sitä vastapäätä
asui kaks alkoholistimiestä
Jotka oli saaneet kaksion kimppaan
mut se tuntui vähän autiolta
ei ollut huonekaluja
kuin yhteen huoneeseen
Ne kysyi isältä veikkausvihjeitä
kun se istui torikahviossa
ja ne rupes puhuun asunto-ongelmastaan
kuin ei muuta oliskaan
Kun meillon vähän liikaa neliöitä
ja sulla kai liian vähän
eiks voitais löytää joku
yksinkertainen ratkaisu tähän
Isä keräs humppavinyylejä
Niiton aika paljon liikkeellä
Mut asunnoista puheen ollen…
Se muutto oli helppo
ei tarvittu hissiä
ja isän Lundia-hyllyä
ei tarvinut edes purkaa
ja Villen ja Taiston sohvapöytä, sängyt ja TV
sopi mainiosti isän vanhaan yksiöön
----
Isä oli löytänyt just naisen Raisiosta
osti kaksion ihan keskustasta
Siinä ne nyt asuu isän kanssa
ja Puutorilla se pitää vain levykokoelmiaan
Ja joka joulu ne tuo laivalta
karkkia ja konjakkia Villelle ja Taistolle
Talking about Flats
My father used to have a one-room flat in the center of Turku
near the Puutori-market place
and at same stair step
in the opposite flat lived two alcoholic men
They had got a two-room flat
but it felt a bit desolate
They had furniture
for one room only
The alcoholics asked for totalizator tips
from my dad, as he sat at the market café
and they started to talk about
the problems of their flat
like they had no others
“As we have too many square-meters
and you have too few,
Can’t we find
a simple solution to this”
Father collected vinyl records of old dance music,
there are plenty of them on the move,
but talking about flats…
It was an easy move,
no need of the elevator
nor taking apart father’s Lundia-shelves
And Ville’s and Taisto’s coffee table, beds and TV
fitted quite well to the father’s old room.
My father had just met a new woman from Raisio(a town west of Turku)
Now he could gladly invite her for a visit
Soon that lady moved to the Portsa-district (a western, wooden house area of Turku).
This was a year ago but the distance seemed still too big
as I just heard that Leila had bought a two-room flat from the center
They live there together now
and the Puutori-flat my father only has for his record collection.
And every Christmas they bring from the ferry
sweets and cognac
for Ville and Taisto

MAJAKKA-ELISE san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(scroll down for translation)
kaupan yläkerrassa
asuu Majakka-Elise
vanhat silmät, puukengät
ja pitkä musta hame
myöhään yöhön
voi kuulla pianon soittoa
Elise soittaa...majakka loistaa
Harry ja Julius
oli kerran eksyneet sun luo
te söitte kampelaa
ja sä soitit etydin
viini oli valkeempaa kuin lasi
ja sun ihos valkeempi kuin viini
...
sä kysyit mitä ne jahtaa
ne sun kaveris
mä piirsin meidät
aina matkalla sun taloos
niinkuin me etsitäään
hylättyä ja kotoista
taloa jossa on halpa vuokra
mä tarviin sut, Elise
sä oot mulle se
sä soitat huoneessas
ja mä olen matkalla aina
sydämeen, sydämeen,
sydämen sydämeen
niinpä mä kerran
toin sulle hauen
sä pyysit
mut olohuoneeseen
hämärässä mä katselin
nuotteja pianon päällä
ja pahvilaatikoissa
sä kerroit ettei kauppias
digannut sun soitosta
sun paljaat jalat hohti
kuin taiottu fosfori
Lighthouse-Elise
Lighthouse-Elise lives upstairs the shop.
Old eyes, clogs and a long black skirt.
And late till the night you can hear the piano
Elise is playing, the lighthouse is lit
Harry and Julius
had once by chance visited you, they told
you ate flatfish
and you played a etude
the wine was whiter than the glass
and your skin was whiter than the wine
...
You asked what are they after, your friends?
I drew us always on the way to your place
Like we are looking for an abandoned and homely
house with a low rent
I need you, Elise
you are the one
You play in your room
and I’m always tripping
to the heart, to the heart,
to the heart of heart
so once I brought you a pike
you said “come in”
in the living room
I watched sheets of music
on the piano and in cardboard boxes
You told that the shopkeeper didn’t
like your playing
Your bare feet shone
like phosphorus

IITU san&säv. Nikolai Blad
(scroll down for translation)
Sunnuntai-aamuna kömmit itse autosta
eläinlääkäriin
Kurjet kerääntyivät taivaan sineen
kun kaivoimme kuoppaasi
Lähditkö sittenkin uusiin seikkailuihin
toinen korva hörössä kohti koirien tähdistöjä?
uskoin hämärästi jälleensyntymään
oikeasti ihmettelin minne menit
ja vielä enemmän hämmästyin
kun viikon päästä tulit takaisin
olit saanut uuden elämän
Hesarin etusivulla
turhien vakuutuslaskujen noutajana
olisit siis yhä turvamme
mutta enää vain paperilla
ja Helsingin OP
on nyt koiramaisempi kuin sinä
mutta sillä ei samaa ole hengitystä
ei karvaisia korviasi
eikä se käperry jalkoihimme yöksi
-
Toivon siis, että saisit paremman paikan kuin
vakuutuslaskujen noutajana
vaikka vaistollasi aina näit
turhien vakuutusten läpi
Iitu
On that Sunday morning
you climbed all by yourself out of the car to the veterinarian
Cranes gathered high in the blue sky
as we dug your grave
Did you still go for new adventures,
jug-eared towards dog stars?
I believed dimly in reincarnation
or really, I just wondered where did you go
and even more I was surprised
as one week after you came back
You had got a new life
on the front page of Helsingin Sanomat(a newspaper)
as a retriever of unnecessary insurance bills
you will still be our safety
but only on the paper
and Helsingin OP( a bank and an insurance company)
is now more doglike than you
But it doesn’t have the same breathing,
nor your hairy ears,
nor does it come sleeping at our feet for the night
So, I hope you will get a better job
than as an insurance bill retriever
Although, with your instinct
you always saw through lies

TANGO ON LAUMAELÄIN san&säv. Nikolai Blad
Kerran lähti portista, kopoti kop
ajettiin kärryillä
joka pihaan poikettiin, kopoti kop
tuttujen ja vieraiden
riuhdottiin, huiskittiin, höristiin
ja maantielle taas
2
Yksin hirnui tallissa kopoti kop
kopse korviin kantautui
ikkunasta hyppäsi, kopoti kop
löysi uuden tallin, hoo
etsittiin, huhuiltiin, löydettiin
ja takaisin palautettiin
3
Nuoruudessaan Saksassa, kopoti kop
tarjoili kuohuvaa
varsana jo tallissa, kopoti kop
tunsi tangon kutsun, hoo
lähdettiin satamaan, seilattiin
niin Suomeen päädyttiin
Tango is a Gregarious Animal
1. Once out of the gate / they drove on the carriage / visiting every house / known or unknown / jerking, swishing, growling / and on the road again
2. Alone he neighed in the stable / hearing the pounding of hoofs / he jumped out of the window / and found a new stable / searching, calling, finding / and was returned
3. In his youth in Germany / he served effervescing drinks / as a colt in the stable already / he felt tango calling / set out to the harbour and sailing / ending to Finland
