Edellisellä levylläni oli kaksi kitarakappaletta ”välipaloina” laulujen joukossa. Nyt ajattelin tehdä näitä koko albumin. Jännä, miten sanaton musiikki antaa laajemmat assosiaatio- ja mielikuvamahdollisuudet. Mistä näiden sävelmieni kansamusiikki tai romanisävyt tulevat? Jostain alitajunnasta? Jotenkin tuntuu, että ne tulevat enemmän soittimesta kuin soittajasta. Tai ne ovat kitarassa. Ja tunteeni seuraavat perässä. Olisiko 6-kielisen soittimen 200-vuotisen voittokulun varrelta puukoppaan kertynyt yhtä ja toista? Kannen kuusensyissä, rimojen pimeissä liitoksissa ja mustalla otelaudalla piilee kaikkea flamencosta slaavifolkkiin ja tangosta vaikka Pelastusarmeijaan. Kitara on kiertänyt, kitara tietää, kitara opastaa. Minä kuuntelen ja soitan. Ja varsinkin jos en laula, kitara puhuu.

Biisinteko on minulla hitaasti kerrostuvaa. Kuten myös sitten biisin opettelu. Olen nyt työstänyt näitä neljää sävelmää. Julkaisen varmaan näin 3-4 biisin ryppäissä. Sitten kun on sopiva määrä kasassa, kokoan ne yhteen ja julkaisen fyysisessäkin formaatissa.

NIKOLAI BLAD: ITINERANTS VOL.1

My last CD had two guitar pieces as "snacks", among the songs. Now I am thinking to do these for the whole album. It's exciting how wordless music gives wider possibilities for association and imagery. Where do the folk music or gypsy tones of my tunes come from? From the subconscious? Somehow it feels like they come more from the instrument than from the player. They are in the guitar. And my feeling follows. After all, over past 200 years this 6-string instrument has made a triumphant journey and its body has accumulated quite a lot. The grain of spruce top, the hidden joints of the braces and the black fretboard may store anything from flamenco to Slavic folk, from tango to the Salvation Army. The guitar has traveled the world, the guitar knows, the guitar guides me. I listen and play. And, especially, when I don’t sing, the guitar speaks.

Composing is a slow process for me. As is learning to play my pieces. I have recently worked on these four. I will continue releasing 3-4 songs at a time. Then, when there is a good amount, I will compile them and publish in a physical format as well.

Who have seen him alive on stage can't just ignore this man. A proof of his talent was the first prize at the Kaustinen Unaccompanied Folksong Contest 1993.
