7. ASUNNOISTA PUHEEN OLLEN ”Talking about flats”

This was originally a ragtime-like instrumental ”Leaving Fleminginkatu”, which celebrated my move from a little distressing flat in Kallio(district in Helsinki). A friend of mine told a story about her father’s apartments, and that blended well with my guitar part, and was appropriate, too.

Tämä oli alun perin ragtimetyyppinen instrumentaali “Lähtö Fleminginkadulta”, joka juhlisti muuttoani hieman ahdistavasta kalliolaisyksiöstä. Muusikkoystävän kertomus isänsä asunto-ongelmista sopi mainiosti kitarointiini, ja pysyi vielä asiassakin.

Isällä oli ennen yksiö Turun keskustassa,
Puutorin nurkilla
ja samassa rapussa sitä vastapäätä
asui kaks alkoholistimiestä
Jotka oli saaneet kaksion kimppaan
mut se tuntui vähän autiolta
ei ollut huonekaluja
kuin yhteen huoneeseen

Ne kysyi isältä veikkausvihjeitä
kun se istui torikahviossa
ja ne rupes puhuun asunto-ongelmastaan
kuin ei muuta oliskaan
Kun meillon vähän liikaa neliöitä
ja sulla kai liian vähän
eiks voitais löytää joku
yksinkertainen ratkaisu tähän

Isä keräs humppavinyylejä
Niiton aika paljon liikkeellä
Mut asunnoista puheen ollen…

Se muutto oli helppo
ei tarvittu hissiä
ja isän Lundia-hyllyä
ei tarvinut edes purkaa
ja Villen ja Taiston sohvapöytä, sängyt ja TV
sopi mainiosti isän vanhaan yksiöön

Isä oli löytänyt just naisen Raisiosta
kelpasi sitä nyt kutsua kylään
eikä aikaakaan niin se lyyli
jo muutti Portsaan omaan yksiöön
Täst on nyt vuosi ja ne yhä seurustelee
mut välimatkaa tais olla vielä liikaa
mä kuulin että seuraavaks Leila
osti kaksion ihan keskustasta
Siinä ne nyt asuu isän kanssa
ja Puutorilla se pitää vain levykokoelmiaan
Ja joka joulu ne tuo laivalta
karkkia ja konjakkia Villelle ja Taistolle

Talking about Flats

My father used to have a one-room flat in the center of Turku
near the Puutori-market place
and at same stair step
in the opposite flat lived two alcoholic men
They had got a two-room flat
but it felt a bit desolate
They had furniture
for one room only

The alcoholics asked for totalizator tips
from my dad, as he sat at the market café
and they started to talk about
the problems of their flat
like they had no others
“As we have too many square-meters
and you have too few,
Can’t we find
a simple solution to this”

Father collected vinyl records of old dance music,
there are plenty of them on the move,
but talking about flats…

It was an easy move,
no need of the elevator
nor taking apart father’s Lundia-shelves
And Ville’s and Taisto’s coffee table, beds and TV
fitted quite well to the father’s old room.

My father had just met a new woman from Raisio(a town west of Turku)
Now he could gladly invite her for a visit
Soon that lady moved to the Portsa-district (a western, wooden house area of Turku).
This was a year ago but the distance seemed still too big
as I just heard that Leila had bought a two-room flat from the center
They live there together now
and the Puutori-flat my father only has for his record collection.
And every Christmas they bring from the ferry
sweets and cognac
for Ville and Taisto
