5.METSÄVALSSI II " Forest Waltz “

My wife bought a storehouse from Central Finland and with it came some movables, like a wooden chest from the 18th century. The seller, who was already old, said she had many times asked her son take it to the forest as scrap. Hence this: “that which had no use anymore / was always taken away to the forest…”

Vaimoni osti aitan Keski-Suomesta ja sen mukana tuli irtainta tavaraa, kuten jostain 1700-luvulta peräisin oleva puuarkku. Myyjä, joka oli jo vanhus, sanoi, että oli jo monta kertaa meinannut pyytää poikaansa viemään sen arkun romuna metsään. Siitä tuli tämä “aina vietiin metsään se…”.

mentiin setää katsomaan
arvokkaasti ajallaan
ulkoilimme me pihalla

täällä luonnon helmassa
versoo hermorauniot
jos huutaa tuskissaan
metsä vastaa vaan ”so not”

Green, wide forest
a path takes you there
as gentle wind blows
the bird cherry blooms
that which had no use anymore
was always taken to the forest
there rot old snow tyres
and an old Salora-TV was covered with moss

the wind lulls the treetops
as cold sharp winter wind
changes its direction for a moment

that which may be useful
was gathered in the shed
a birch gnarl, a hook of branch
were left behind the woodpile
grow gnarl in the birch
and the birch in the meadow
the young twig is twisted
and a whim is turned into a victory

a family of grouse
scattered around
they walked with dignity and no haste
don't gasify
when animals appear on the road
whether it is someone's cat, a fox-puppy
or a hazel grouse

Nikolai Blad, born in 1963 in Tampere, Finland, is one of the Finnish singer-songwriters. He has released three solo EP:s and five CDs and they have got good reviews. Who have seen him alive on stage can't just ignore this man. A proof of his talent was the first prize at the Kaustinen Unaccompanied Folksong Contest 1993.
