3. TENERIFFABLUES "TENERIFE BLUES"
A song about homesickness. I had developed a guitar solo for ”Kuubalainen serenadi”(a finnish schlager from the 1940s) and it began to live a life of its own. The lyrics I wrote one Christmas in Tenerife. An apple doesn’t fall far.

Laulu koti-ikävästä. "Kuubalaisen serenadiin" kehittämäni kitarasoolo alkoi elää omaa elämäänsä. Kappale sai sitten tekstin eräänä jouluna etelässä. Ei omena kauas putoa.

Keskellä aavan meren on saari ihana
se hedelmistään kaukaa tunnetaan
Jyrkät rannat muuten, mut suojaisa poukama
on aina tehnyt kauppaa tuotteillaan
Ja myrkkylaiva kun saapuu satamaan
terävinä sitä täällä odottaa
porton nännit, vuorenhuiput
ja paukut kapakoissa sataman

Sydän jos on sulla, se pelkää pahinta
ei tohdi tulla – siis ota tilkka
Matkallasi kohti Skandinaviaa
rohkaisua aina tarvitaan
Ei täällä ole koskaan tarvinnut odottaa,
että joka iikka ryypyn eteensä saa
Engelsmanni ryypyn joi
ennen kuin ehdit huutaa Hoi!

Tää humala on kölin alta, meren haudasta
ja paineen alla pohjaa koluan
Siellä tuli vastaan muuan meriantura
päätyi pannulle se saman kapakan
On koti-ikävä nyt meillä aivan hirveä
se niin kuin tyrsky rintaani löi
Mut pahemmin – kaiketi
osui tyttöön, joka tulppaaneja möi.

kun täältä kerran lennän pohjoiseen
niin vilttiini mä tiukkaan käperryn
hoikat emot kulkee ohi ruokakärryineen
mä katson ulos pimeyteen
jossain alapuolellamme valoneliöitä nään
ne pilvien takaa häämöttää
Hollanti – kaiketi –
kasvihuoneet siellä luovat valoaan

Tenerife Blues

1. In the middle of the ocean / there’s an lovely island famous for its fruits / Steep coast, but one cosy bay / has always sold its products / When a toxic ship comes in / they are sharp waiting for it: / whore’s nipples, mountain tops / and shots in the port’s bars
2. If you have a heart, it is scared / of coming in – please have drink / On your way to Scandinavia / you always need encouragement / Nobody here waits till everybody has got his drink / the Englishman takes it / before you can say: Hoi!
3. This intoxication comes under the keel from the sea’s grave / I am under pressure / A sole came by there / it ended on the pan of the same bar / We have a terrible home-sickness / it’s like a wave hitting my breast / But even worse – I guess / - it hit the maid selling tulips
4. When I fly back to the North / I will tightly wrap myself in the blanket / Fit hostesses pass with their carriages / I look out into the darkness / Somewhere below us I see light squares / they appear behind the clouds / Holland – I suppose / greenhouses are shining there

Nikolai Blad, born in 1963 in Tampere, Finland, is one of the Finnish singer-songwriters. He has released three solo EP:s and five CDs and they have got good reviews. Who have seen him alive on stage can't just ignore this man. A proof of his talent was the first prize at the Kaustinen Unaccompanied Folksong Contest 1993.
