Kun isä oli kalauttanut minua lapiolla,
irtauduin ruumiista
ja lensin kuin fenix grillikatoksen päälle

Old Shovel

When my father had slammed me with a shovel,
I came out of my body
and flew like a phoenix
on the roof of the barbeque canopy
to monitor the situation.

After killing sister and mother, too
Dad drags us in between roses and peonies.
Now he uses the shovel in the traditional style
digs us a grave in the garden.

Soon, we lie in the grave,
the roots and the fatherland around us
and mother's mouth is full of mold.

Quickly the peony roots absorb the words from the mother’s tongue
and conjugate them to their own use,
their own soil, like mother
once gave us words to grow up with

and we become very quiet
father sits down in a sun chair.
For a while, the shovel,
the peonies and his marriage seem almost talkative to him

the old shovel and the marriage lasted everything:
also tenacious roots and scorching springs,
long boring summers and clay soils where frost thrives and longing
